The Victorian Government invested $53 million in the Great Ocean Road Resilience Project to safeguard against geotechnical risks. As part of this investment, Regional Roads Victoria took action to improve safety on the Great Ocean Road by undertaking complex rock removal works on the cliff face east of Cumberland River.

Rockfall Mitigation
PROJECT SOLUTION

This project required the construction of Australia and NZ’s first ever fully stainless steel Geobrugg rockfall attenuator. It was a big system constructed around 50m above the road that was 100m long with 5-7m high posts anchored and founded on concrete plinth footings with a 50m long tail to control the future rockfall debris to the roadside for clearance. The barrier was drilled and constructed with high reach telehandler drills, rope access wagons drills and a 100t crane. Other works included scaling, rock bolts and sections of dimensioned mesh as further protection.
